What Is Finasteride?

Finasteride is sold under many brand names and is a popular medication used by people to treat benign prostate enlargement and hair loss in men. It has a contrasting effect on women and may be used to treat excessive hair growth in them. The oral medication is also used in transgender women as part of their hormone therapy.

Finasteride for sale — a hair loss solution?

Finasteride is an antiandrogen due to its property of 5α-reductase properties. It reduces the DHT production by a considerable percentage in the prostate and scalp areas. It is also effective in blocking many neurosteroids like THDOC and allopregnanolone.

It is considered a great hair loss solution and has been approved for medical use since 1992. It is available from stores and is considered a generic medicine, and people like the fact that it does not have very severe adverse effects.

Some people do complain of depression and sexual dysfunction, but these are temporary effects and usually subside when the medicine is stopped. Finasteride is one of the most prescribed medications and patented.

Can Finasteride solve acne?

There are many reasons for the development of acne, and one of them is hormonal imbalance. This can happen at any age, and the main culprit is dihydrotestosterone (DHT) again, which produces more oil in the skin. Finasteride, as we know, reduces the impact of DHT and its effect on sebum-producing glands and may help to decrease acne and improve the appearance of the skin. However, it is still not approved for acne and treatment by the FDA.

5-a reductase blocker alternatives

Apart from Finasteride, there are many other 5α-reductase inhibitors, and most of them are derived from plants. These have Phyto estrogenic properties and help to block the negative impact of DHT. Dutasteride is a similar compound that is used to treat prostate and hair loss. Saw Palmetto is well-known and has been used as a hair loss solution for many years.

However, it is controversial due to unclear results and its side effects due to indiscriminate use by people. Green tea, Reishi mushroom, and many other compounds from common plants are being researched further to understand their role as inhibitors of 5-alpha-reductase.

Finasteride dosage and cycle length

The FDA approves Finasteride for benign prostate enlargement (BPL), and the doctors prescribe the dosage for this condition. Both BPL and hair loss may occur due to the DHT, and doctors usually prescribe a dosage of less than 5 mg a day, starting with 1 mg. You must take medicine every day at the same time.

Remember that you cannot compensate for a missing dosage by taking a double dose the next day. Similarly, taking more than the prescribed dosage is not advisable either. Both these are dangerous and may lead to severe side effects.

Points to remember-

  • Take finasteride only under a doctor’s supervision and adhere to the dosage. Don’t increase or decrease it yourself.
  • A smaller dosage may be cheaper and may cause fewer side effects. So if prescribed a lower dosage, don’t force the doctor to give more, and do not take more than is strictly needed.
  • It is usually a long-term treatment, so be patient before you see any results.
